Carol Clemens

The Suzuki 24 Hours of Big Bear Mountain Bike Race 2008 is Won by Ms. Cookie (aka Carol Clemens) in the women's solo division & by Tinker Juarez in the men's division
It was hot (90)... it was humid..& it was was muddy on the 12.8 mi. rocky single track course at big bear lake in West Virginia....There were over 600 riders on 133 teams including 50 solo men & 5 solo women all riding at the top of their game...the Suzuki Series is a 6 race national series including :
24 Hours of Vail Lake
24 Hours of Conyers
24 Hours of Bear Lake
24 Hours of Killington
24 Hours of Landal
24 Hours of Moab
In the men's solo division were names like Tinker Juarez...Rob Lichtenwaler, last years series winner,& Steve Schwarz, defending champion of last years Big Bear Race....In the women's division were Holly Forsythe, last years series & Big Bear winner,Heidi Shilling a serious contender hoping to win this years series, & Ms Cookie (aka Carol Clemen's) 2008 Women's Ultra Endurance Individual Rankings leader  this year ...a tough group of riders w/o a doubt!
With a LeMond start & a log jam going into the single track at the end of the 1st lap our Ms. Cookie was in 3rd place 5min.  back of the leader... by lap 3 she was in second going ahead of Shilling but still 5 min. out of 1st place...that would change again in lap 4 ( the 1st night lap) where Carol took over the lead (riding  w/ Lupine Lights)...by the last of the night laps(lap 8) with no sleep & only short breaks (40 min. or less) she was a full 2 hours in front of Shilling 's 2nd place spot...after 9 laps with no way of knowing where Shilling was on the course Carol made the wise albeit painful  decision (at 11:20 am)  to go out for lap 10 ( this turned out to be too much for Shilling who stopped after lap 9) capping off a hard fought & well deserved victory ....10 laps of mud, rocks, steep long climbs & descents, killer heat & humidity, 128 miles,16,300 feet of elevation, & zero sleep....That's one TOUGH Cookie!!!!!
finishing order:
1. Ms. Cookie  10 laps (13:36)
2. Shilling          9 laps (11:20)
3. Baumgart      8 laps ( 10:43)
4. Beckman       6 laps (8:50)
5. Forsyth          4 laps (20:57)
